Winner in Increasing Participation category

London Corinthian Sailing Club

Taking part is at the heart of the Corinthian spirit, and London Corinthian Sailing Club has made significant progress in rebuilding that spirit with major initiatives to increase participation catering to all tastes in both dinghies and yachts.

The club has created a family section along with a crèche, to enable parents to get afloat, and purchased safety netting for use on yachts to encourage parents to sail with their youngsters.

A ‘Toe in the Water’ programme supports newcomers and develops novice sailors, and is a key part of the training pathway which has been developed to offer activities from novice, through dinghy racing, to yachts, (both theory and practical), supported with the purchase of two additional club boats.

Specific sessions encourage newcomers to sail with more experienced sailors. ‘Riverbanking’ is ideal for those wanting a fun sociable sail. ‘Wacky Racing’ is aimed at those who are slightly more competitive, looking to transition to club racing, both class and handicap.

A crew matching process ensures the double handed fleet is well subscribed too, along with a successful match racing.

Significant growth in the student and under 26 membership categories has resulted from a focused attempt to reduce the impact of an aging membership. The club is also successful in attracting non-UK nationals, providing an eclectic membership mix; a testament to the welcoming and accessible nature of the club and one which is truly representative of London.

Doubling the dinghy launching capacity, and a new drying room and gear storage, has enabled additional activity, with kit and equipment available to new sailors.

The club’s comprehensive yacht cruising and racing programme has resulted in it becoming a hub for yacht sailors living in London. Events throughout the year cater for all levels of experience.

Over the past few years this club has really turned itself around, and now offers a wide range of activities, for all ages, all levels of experience and all aspirations.
